Collections

The collection of medieval manuscripts consists of over 1,400 volumes and more than a thousand fragments. These can be viewed upon request, but a large part is available to view online.

The Special Collections of the UvA at the Allard Pierson contain approximately 200 medieval manuscripts and 500 fifteenth-century printed works.

Masterpieces from foreign collections include the thirteenth-century Lieven van Lathem Book of Hours from Ghent and the Caesar manuscript De bello Gallico from the ninth century.

The collection of Museum De Waag consists of, among other things, paintings, drawings and prints, decorative and utilitarian objects, archaeological finds, and architectural objects. In addition, the collection contains a collection of coins and medals that bears witness to the Deventer coinage.

There is a permanent exhibition about the origins of Zutphen, including Vikings in 882 and the Hanseatic period. In addition, several medieval objects can be viewed online.

The Huis van Hilde is the archaeology museum of the province of North Holland. Several million finds are stored in the depot, dating from the Stone Age to after the Second World War. A small part of our collection is on display in the museum. Other objects can be requested or viewed in the online collection.

Tresoar's medieval manuscripts consist primarily of manuscripts from the Richthofenkolleksje collection (the largest collection of Old Frisian legal manuscripts) and the collection of the Franeker University Library.

In the KB collection, you will find manuscripts and bookbindings from the period between circa 800 and 1550. The collection consists of approximately 1,500 manuscripts and fragments and is primarily composed of illuminated, Middle Dutch, and liturgical manuscripts.

De bibliotheek beheert een collectie middeleeuwse handschriften en vroeg gedrukt werk uit de 15e, 16e en 17 eeuw. Hieronder vallen ook de bijzondere kettingboeken uit de eerste stadsbibliotheek van Rotterdam.

The Athenaeum Library is the oldest city library in the Netherlands. The collection consists of centuries-old and richly decorated manuscripts, atlases, colorful botanical works, and the first books that came off the presses of the Deventer printers in the fifteenth century.

The Huis van het Boek manages a collection of books from all periods of Western book history. This also includes a collection of medieval manuscripts dating back to the 6th century AD. The development of writing, layout, and decoration of manuscripts can be traced in a nutshell in the book hall, where a selection of the collection is on display.

The first director of Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Jan Herman van Heek, had a fondness for medieval art. During his thirty-year directorship, he enriched the museum with an invaluable collection of medieval artworks dating from 1200.

The National Museum of Antiquities manages a large number of medieval objects. Some of these can be viewed online in their digital database.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art also owns a small number of 15th-century artworks.

The collection consists of a large amount of religious art. Sculptures, in particular, form an important part of this. Many of the artworks refer to the history of the Bridgettine Abbey, in which the museum is located.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam manages a large collection of medieval art. Part of this is on display and largely comprises religious art from the period between 1100 and 1600.

The museum manages a considerable number of medieval objects, primarily everyday items from excavations. A large part of these can be seen in the online collection.

The collection consists of sculpture, painting, manuscripts and old prints, textiles, and goldsmithing from various periods, including the Middle Ages. Together, they form the most important art and cultural-historical collection of Christian heritage in the Netherlands.

De collectie bestaat uit een grote hoeveelheid religieuze kunst. Met name beeldhouwwerken zijn hier een belangrijk onderdeel van. Veel van de werken verwijzen naar de geschiedenis van de abdij van de Birgittinessen.

Het museumwordt momenteel verbouwd, een deel van de collectie is ondergebracht in het H'ART Museum.

The museum manages a collection of archaeological Coptic material from the period between 300 and 1000 AD. The largest part consists of Coptic textiles, gravestones, and liturgical objects.
